How to make Hazelnut Chocolate Cake

By Jocelyn Hennessey / LifeAtStart.com Reporter

Hazelnut Chocolate Cake

  • Seven tablespoons of unsalted butter
  • One tablespoon of cocoa powder
  • One cup of hazelnuts
  • Three ounces of chocolate (broken into pieces)
  • Six large eggs
  • ¼ teaspoon of sea salt
  • 13 ounces of chocolate hazelnut spread
  • Two tablespoons of espresso
  • Powdered sugar for dusting
  • Sweetened whipped cream

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Coat pan with a thin layer of unsalted butter. Add cocoa powder, covering pan evenly. Place hazelnuts on a baking sheet and toast in oven for eight to ten minutes. Lower the oven to 350 degrees F. Fill a medium sized pot with about an inch of water, bringing it to a simmer over medium heat. In a heatproof bowl, place the chocolate pieces in and set over the pot. Water should not touch bottom of the bowl. Once the chocolate is melted, stir. Once it is completely melted, remove the chocolate from the heat.

Chop hazelnuts into small pieces. Crack six eggs into a bowl, removing the yolks into a separate bowl. Whip egg whites to a stiff peak. Take the remaining five tablespoons of butter and mix it with the chocolate hazelnut spread in a large bowl. Stir in the espresso. Add the yolks, stirring lightly. Stir in hazelnut pieces. Add ¼ of the egg whites to the batter. Then add more egg whites within three additions after.

Pour the mix into the pan, then bake on the center rack until sides of cake release from the edges of the pan, which is 40 minutes. The inside is like fudge, so no need to check inside with a toothpick. Add powdered sugar on top and enjoy.

New to the shoe

0

By Dom / LifeAtStart.com Reporter

Everyone has a preferred shoe and mine would have to be the brand Vans. I was never really a big shoe guy I usually just wore whatever my parents got me to wear but then I found this company.

Vans are a basic type of shoe and are still comfortable to wear. Despite the fact that the shoe brand endorses you to wear them for skateboarding and long boarding I’ve made a habit of buying them for casual wear. I like Vans because they can go with almost anything and still last a long time unlike other brands of shoes.

They come in many colors and different shapes that compliment your feet well. Most shoes have really strange grips on the bottom of the shoe that make it hard to walk/run in at times but with Vans it feels right. The traction that helps with hanging onto the board also helps with climbing down steep hills, or just getting through rough terrain in general.

I love the different kinds of Vans you can get to match your everyday clothes, it’s almost like you can play dress up with yourself.

Anti-melting pot

By Rayne Wilcox  / Lifeatstart.com Reporter

Melting Pot: A place where different peoples, styles, theories, etc., are mixed together.

This is what the United States has been known for as long as I can remember. It’s what I learned about in my history books and what I’ve learned throughout the 17 years of my life.

Recently, we have inaugurated Donald Trump as the president of the United States of America and  his first round of business when he went into office was to ban immigrants from several countries to come into the United States for seven months.

This act separated families who are trying to find a better life in the United States by getting away from the battleground of their home countries.

I’m not a big political person and I try to stay away from politics and the news,  but this one act caught my attention.

I don’t like the idea that there are families who are separated from their loved ones because of who they are and for what they believe in. I don’t think it’s right that kids can’t see their parents because of what one guy believes is the right thing to do.

He’s rich, so he doesn’t have that problem of not being able to  see his family or go through the struggles that they go  through in their country.

Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has recently stated that refugees are welcome in Canada and a picture has recently been going around of him standing at the airport welcoming Muslims to Canada.

I applaud Canada for opening their arms to them. Muslims need to know that there is nothing wrong with them for who they are or for what they believe in. Right now, Donald Trump is making them think that there is something wrong with them and that is not OK. You should never feel like  there is something wrong with you from the one person who is supposed to make you feel welcomed, the president.

I know that Donald Trump just got into office, but I hope that he does something productive that doesn’t involve banning people, judging, or being homophobic. I hope he does something that is  respectful to everyone in this country.

Fish and chips?

0

By Christopher Cook  / LifeAtStart.com Reporter

Within the vast diversity of our world you can’t believe everything you are told. You can’t even trust the foods you eat to be what they are labeled as. Here are some common food deceptions.

  • American Cheese singles aren’t actually considered cheese but cheese products because there is less than 51% of real cheese in its ingredients.
  • Margarine is not actually the healthy alternative to butter it has been marketed as for decades because of the items used to extend its shelf life.
  • Pringles aren’t actually potato chips stacked in a tube, the potato content of Pringles is only 42% coming from dehydrated potato flakes mixed into a dough.
  • Red Snapper is the most mislabeled and miss sold fish food product throughout the US. They are often substituted by 28 different species of fish occurring in 93% of Red Snapper purchases.
  • The common pumpkin spice found in your seasonal drinks most likely contains no spices at all. It is more likely that your pumpkin spice is composed of chemicals.
  • Peanuts, walnuts, pecans and almonds are not actually nuts. Peanuts are legumes. Walnuts, pecans and almonds are classified as drupes.
  • Oranges lose their natural orange flavor when converted into juice and use flavoring to restore the orange taste.
  • Though zero calorie drinks are marketed as the healthier alternative, studies show that these drinks often lead to weight gain.
I would recommend checking the ingredients and looking up nutritional facts before you eat your foods.
