Daddy’s little girl

Mr. Kevin Rome. This man is the goofiest, most loving father that I’ve ever met. He lives in Columbus, Ohio, so I don’t see him that often. He tries his best to be there for me. I appreciate what he does for me because I know he will always support me the best that he can.

We have had some ups and downs with our relationship. Well, the first thing is that my mom and dad aren’t together. That used to break my heart as a child because I always wanted my parents under the same roof. The second thing is that he would rarely come home to see me. He would always say that he had to work and he couldn’t make it. He would say that he would come home the next week, then the next week, and then that would turn into a month.

Lastly, he put another woman before my brother and me. Fun fact, my brother and I do not share the same mother. Now, I’ll give him credit, he did try his best to see me, but when he began dating her, he never came home to see me. He came home to see her. Crazy, right? He never called to say that he came home. I would always find out on social media. I would see posts from her saying how much fun that they were having together. I cried every time that happened. That woman even said to my dad that she didn’t like my brother and I, especially me. She said, and I quote,”You spend too much time with your daughter.” When I found out that he was still dating her after she said that, I didn’t answer any of his calls or texts, and when he came home, I would tell my mom that I didn’t want to be around him. It was really bad.

Then, a year later, they broke up. That was the happiest day of my life when I heard the good news, but I was still mad at my dad. It took a lot of growing to do, but we got through it. Now, he comes home more often, he takes my brother and I places when he comes home, and he sends me money out of the blue. I’m grateful and thankful for my dad. Just like my mom, I don’t know what I would do without him.

How to get better sleep

Do you ever have trouble sleeping? Not getting enough sleep can cause your brain to not function correctly, increases stress, affects your hormones and body.

One way to stay healthy and get better sleep is coming up with a schedule when going to bed, especially when you’re working or going to school the next day. Try get 7 to 9 hours of sleep; getting that amount of sleep is known as the best amount of sleep for an average person.

Another way of getting better sleep is not to drink anything before bed, especially alcohol and caffeine. Alcohol can mess up the circadian rhythm of your sleep. Caffeine can increase your focus and energy causing you to not feel tired. Drinking before bed can cause you to wake up from your sleep and want to use the restroom. Try avoiding such drinks and use the restroom before bed.

Bedroom temperatures, lights, and noises are also a common effect of not being able to sleep. When you’re in your bed you’re not able to sleep because either it’s too hot or too cold. Lights should be turned off when you are sleeping, also reduce noises around the room.

Relax and clear your mind of all things that you worry about. Clear your mind by taking a hot bath or shower. Read a book or listen to music. Worrying, nervousness, and being excited can keep you awake all night.

Enough sleep is good for your health. Not only will you feel better, but you’ll have a lot more energy to do things in your life and become less stressed. No need for caffeine to stay awake.

Shameless

One of my favorite shows is Shameless, because of how real it is. It is based off of what life in the lower class level is really like, to which I can relate.

Shameless is more than just a demonstration of struggles in the lower class, it also contains love stories. Ian, one of the six Gallagher siblings, was in love with a gas station cashier and would occasionally hook up with him and no one in his family knew he was gay. When he eventually came out to his family, they all accepted him, and he went on to fall in love with a man named Mickey.

Shameless has really good actors and they all know how to play their roles. They all portray an amazing amount of emotion and I find it odd when I see the actors from Shameless in other movies or shows because it seems like they’re not acting at all. I feel that no show tops Shameless.

WTOL is lit

Everyone always dreads having to do state testing: it’s annoying, exhausting, and so drawn out. Last week, TPS had to do their state testing and one of our local news stations, WTOL 11, decided they would make a video to encourage the students to do well on their tests and to maybe relieve some of their stress. Within the video they used slang words such as, “gucci,” “yeet,” and “slay.” The video was supposed to be goofy and encouraging but everyone took it in the wrong way. It was called cringe-worthy and offensive. As a teenager, of course I thought it was a bit odd that adults were using our slang, but I never once would’ve considered it offensive. It was actually quite amusing.

Everyone quickly turned this video into a race issue, implying that only black people use these words, when in reality all teenagers no matter their race use them. The news anchors were simply trying to lighten the mood, but instead were being called racist. Using slang does not make anyone racist and if you think it does, you may need to do a little research and see what being racist really is. Everyone in this generation has become so sensitive and narrow-minded. I hope these next generations aren’t nearly as sensitive and are more open-minded.
