Why can’t we vote? In America, the land of the free, why can’t we vote?
Recently, there was a discussion between a friend and I about the upcoming election and we realized that we couldn’t vote. It’s stating the obvious, but we both agreed it would be fairer to change the legal voting age to 16. Although it seems very young, when you think about it, it makes some sense. At 16, most teenagers are at least juniors in high school, they take some form of American Government, and often get asked about the upcoming elections. Given that they’d have to have valid arguments to defend their opinions, I feel as though they’re old enough to make the decision of who should be president, mayor, etc.
Along with taking classes, the average 16 year-old also has a driver’s license. Driving adds even more laws a teenager has to follow, those of which teens have no say in. Teens get the same repercussions that a legal adult would get, but they have no authority to change some things in their favor.
Quite frankly, there would be a criteria to follow. I believe that if a person is 16 years old and has a driver’s license, he should be able to register to vote at least within his state. If limited to state, he, then, should have to wait until 18 years old to be able to register to vote federally. I would like to hear other opinions on this topic given that this was a conversation between only two people.
